Origami Cicada Bug

Learn how to fold a traditional origami cicada bug. This super easy origami insect takes about 1 minute to complete.

This traditional Japanese origami cicada is very basic, it’s great to make with children because you can decorate it with eyes afterward.

Being one of those designs that only resembles the shape of the real version (the cicada), it does take some imagination to see a cicada!

We recommend using small paper once you have learned to make it. Using smaller paper will result in a more “bug sized” cicada.

Step 1:

Fold the top point down to the bottom point.

Fold the top right point diagonally down to the bottom point.

Fold the top left point down to the bottom point.

Fold both flaps up to the top point. You can also angle these flaps outward a bit, this will make the wings further apart.

Fold one layer from the bottom up, leaving a small gap.

Rotate the paper and flip it over to the other side.

Fold the left and right edges to meet in the middle. You can overlap them slightly so that you can slot one into the other.
